Artist’s haven

April 13, 2007

Taos, N.M. is known for its numerous galleries, studios and funky art shops. This small town is located high in the Sangre de Christo mountains of northern New Mexico. This photo shows the intersection of Kit Carson Road and North Pueblo Road in the late 1950s. Check out that too cool Texaco station dressed up in its pueblo-best, complete with vigas poking out the side. The string of shops in the background feature Martin’s Cafe and the El Chico Dining Room.

This view shows U.S. 64 entering the main business district in the early 1960s. A beautiful, walkable streetscape lies ahead. Park the car and head over to Foster’s Cafe, run by Harry and Lena.
