Busy intersection

May 7, 2007

Here we are sitting at the intersection of Girard, Monte Vista and Central Avenue in the bustling city of Albuquerque. This crossroads on Route 66 has often been called “Badman’s Corners,” since every “badman” or wanted man has at one time or another passed this point. The detail of this photo has an interesting juxtaposition of roadside elements: An Indian woman sits on a bench inches from the road, a conestoga wagon advertises souvenirs and just beyond, a modern drive-in restaurant. An array of cultures clustered together.

On the bridge

Cottonwoods brush against the concrete railings of Albuquerque’s Rio Grande bridge. The river itself looks a little low. This photo from the 1950s, looks toward the northeast, showing a beautiful sky over the Sandia Mountains.
